About the Gem Cutter

My name is Julia and welcome to Julia DeLo Precision Co., where engineering precision meets the artistry of gem cutting.

My venture into the realm of gem cutting began with a blend of curiosity and engineering acumen cultivated during my studies at Worcester Polytechnic Institute for mechanical engineering. Although my professional journey initially led me into the corporate engineering  pathway, my innate drive for innovation and skilled craftsmanship steered me towards the captivating world of gem cutting.

I had occasionally seen videos of gem cutting online, but I knew nothing about the trade. After doing intermittent research here and there, I happened to stumble across a listing online for a Graves Mark IV gem cutting machine with accessories for sale via local pick up only. However, this machine was located near the Maryland/Virginia area. Coincidentally, I landed my first engineering job in South Carolina and was prepping to move extremely soon. Seemingly by a stroke of luck, the seller agreed to sell me the machine during my 15 hour drive down south on the only day I would be in the area. I met with the seller (thank you Scott!) and then suddenly, I had a gem cutting machine of my own.

Since then, I've embarked on a continuous quest for improvement in both skill and knowledge. I am now on my third gem cutting machine (an Ultratec VL) as my desire to improve my cutting quality meant I needed to continuously upgrade my equipment over time. My engineering background has given me a unique perspective on precision machinery and the ability to develop my own tools to better my own gem cutting abilities.

My journey in gem cutting has been one of self-discovery and perseverance. With no formal mentors, I relied on the internet and the generosity of fellow enthusiasts like my friend Bob, whose guidance and advice were invaluable in my early days. Over time, I've forged connections within the gem cutting community, learning from experts and sharing my own insights and innovations.

Today, as an engineer in the aerospace industry, my commitment to quality and attention to detail permeate every facet of my work, enriching my craft as a gem cutter. Each gemstone I cut is a labor of love, meticulously crafted to perfection, a testament to my dedication to the art form.

By supporting my work, you're not just purchasing a gemstone; you're investing in a dream. Your support enables me to pursue my passion for gem cutting and brings me one step closer to realizing my goal of making gem cutting my full-time career. Thank you for joining me on this journey of creativity, innovation, and unyielding pursuit of excellence.

Why Get a Precision Cut Gemstone?

Precision cut gemstones are the epitome of craftsmanship and excellence in the world of gemology. Unlike their commercial counterparts, which are often mass-produced with speed and quantity as the primary focus, precision cut gemstones are meticulously crafted by skilled artisans who devote hours, if not days, to perfecting each facet and angle. This attention to detail ensures that every facet is aligned with mathematical precision, maximizing the gemstone's brilliance, fire, and overall visual appeal.

One of the key distinctions between precision cut gemstones and commercial cuts lies in the consideration given to the gemstone's inherent characteristics. Precision cutters carefully study the gem's natural crystal structure, color, and clarity to determine the optimal cutting technique that will enhance its beauty while minimizing any imperfections. This personalized approach results in gemstones that exhibit superior optical properties and exhibit a level of symmetry and proportion rarely seen in mass-produced pieces.

Precision cutting is not merely a technical process but an art form in its own right. It requires a deep understanding of geometry, optics, and aesthetics, coupled with a keen eye for detail and an unwavering commitment to perfection. Each cut is a deliberate decision, guided by the cutter's intuition and expertise, to unlock the gemstone's full potential and reveal its inner beauty.

The unparalleled craftsmanship and artistry involved in precision cutting naturally command a higher price tag. Collectors and connoisseurs of fine jewelry recognize the value of owning a piece that has been painstakingly crafted to perfection, not only as a symbol of luxury but also as a testament to the skill and dedication of the artisan. Additionally, precision cut gemstones often retain their value over time, making them not just a purchase, but an investment in something of enduring beauty and craftsmanship. In a world where mass-produced goods dominate the market, precision cut gemstones stand out as timeless treasures that celebrate the marriage of art and science.
